The Rovers history is long. 125 years with pride has gone. Blackburn was founded in 1875, and played their first match against Church. Rovers took the lead with a goal by Bertwistle, but Church grabbed a goal after some hard struggling and the match ended a draw. The two former public schoolboys, John Lewis and Arthur Constantine called the meating which lead into the foundation of Blackburn Rovers.
Thomas Greenwood was Rovers first captain and goalkeeper. He had his two other brothers playing with him on the Rovers team too.
The 1875-76 season produced an income of 2 8s 0d, made up entirely of members' subscriptions. As the club were without a ground of their own there were no gate receipts. Nonetheless, John Lewis, the club's first treasurer, was able to balance the books as there was little outlay. The club did spend 15 shillings on a football - the only one they possessed. The following season saw The Rovers take the princely sum of 6s 6d in gate money, whilst 4d had to be paid for a policeman to "regulate" the crowd at one match. By the 1877-78 season, the club's fortunes were on an upward trend and the match against Patrick Thistle on 2.January 1878 brought in gate receipts of 25 6s 0d. Unfortunately, as attendances increased, so did the cost of policing and 6s 3d had to be paid to the police during the 1877-78 season. In 1879, Rovers entered the F.A Cup competition for hte first time. After two convincing victories, a 6-0 trashing at Nottingham Forest showed that they still had some way to go before etablishing themselves as one of the country's stronger outfits. On November 27, Rovers had their first taste of crowd trouble as 10 000 witnessed a match against Darwen. A good many of the crowd decided to join the match! And the match was abandoned.
In the 1881-82 season, Rovers moved into their new homeground at Leamingston Street.
Rovers had now began to make themselves well known in England, and as the years went by..Rovers got bigger and bigger, and better and better.
